Wendigo traveled to examine the Border, as he hadn't in a long time, and he wanted to check to see if the stories of the Machine were fake or real.
After seeing this, he knows it's real now.
The trees were shredded and had fallen to the ground, or had fallen on another tree and ended tangled up in the branches. There were canyons in the earth where a tree or rock had been dug up and moved. It was a horror sight to any rat like Wendigo, which made him want to seek revenge. Why can't they just destroy the machine? Get it over with so this can't happen again! In his heart he knew that was harder than it sounded, but still. He was determined to do something, not just sit around and hope something happens.
After seeing the destruction, his desire to destroy the machine - don't study it, destroy it - became stronger. He wants this over with.

There was a slight swing of his hips with each step he took. His pace was slow and relaxed despite the constant threat of a mouse out in the open. He paused here and there, black eyes seeking out anything of interest. An acorn, a cool looking leaf, and- oh! A caterpillar! The mouse with fur of rust scampered over to the bug that slowly inched its way across a leaf. Its weight caused the spine to bend, lowering the leaf enough that the mouse could peer up at the caterpillar if he stood up on his hind legs. His front paws reached up, gripping at the edge of the leaf and pulling it down for a better view. Valerian let out a soft chuckle before pausing once more. His ears twitched, and wide eyes looked to the side, having heard the faint sound of rustling. Was someone else there? He released the leaf and dropped back down before starting toward the noise. In a matter of moments, he reached the vast scar that had been torn into the forest by the Machine. Twitching his whiskers, he shuffled around before spotting a rat. He had heard plenty about their foul attitudes, especially toward the mice population, but he had never spoken to one before. Well, as they say, curiosity killed the cat! And I'm not a cat, so it's fine! With that thought in mind, he scurried toward the unknown rat. " Hello!" He chimed. " Pleasant day we're having, hm?" He was definitely quite the conversationalist, if that was not obvious. He slowed as he neared, keeping his distance before stopping and leaning back on his hind paws. TAGS: Majority

Wendigo whipped around to face whoever it was who was talking to him. To his surprise and annoyance, it was a mouse - a common, little rusty-colored mouse. Wendigo puffed his fur out as if the scare the mouse away, even though he knew well he had no right; he didn't own this piece of land and neither did the mouse. But Wendigo didn't care.
"Who are you, and why are you here?" He asked in a somewhat-calm way, but his body language said otherwise. His fur fluffed, he was in defensive position, and ready to strike. "One wrong move..." he muttered under his breath, not sure whether the little mouse would hear, but not caring either way. He waited impatiently for his answer.

The little mouse blinked at the defensive posture the rat reacted with, ready to strike. Or... maybe he was trying to be intimidating? Birds did that sometimes! They ruffled their feathers to look bigger. Wait, he might be thinking of something else. Valerian's head tilted to the side, more curious of the stranger's movements than anything else. It was unlike a mouse, especially one as small as he, to not be scared off by the slightest movement. His curiosity overpowered even the faint bubble of anxiety that tried to surface in the back of his mind. " Why, I should be asking you the same thing!" His whiskers twitched with amusement as he took a small step forward, trying to gauge just how close he could get. " I am Valerian, like the plant! My whole family is named after plants, actually." He took another small step, clearly not hearing the rat's threat. " I'm hear with the pursuit of knowledge! What about you?" TAGS: Majority

Wendigo, being the mouse-hating, impatient, mean rat that he was, gave no more thought to the mouse's words, and leapt forward to attack. He did not care if he missed, as long as he scare, injure, or even just annoy this mouse was enough for him. He had no right to attack; neither was on the other's territory; but still, even just seeing a mouse made Wendigo furious. He was ready for anything.

" Woah!" Valerian let out a squeak of alarm when all of his questions were met not with words but with the entire body of the rat. He scrambled out of the way, using his small size to duck beneath the leaping rat. Putting some distance between them, he turned back around, ready to flee again should the rat try another attack. " You seem to have deep seated anger issues- I'm a scholar! I can help!" He had no idea if he could help, but he would rather try than flee with his tail between his legs. What kind of pursuer of knowledge would he be if he didn't? " It's bias against mice, right? Or something in your past? No friends? I can be your friend, you know!" Valerian grasped at straws in hope that the large rat would speak with his words rather than his aggression. TAGS: Majority

"You are...the most annoying..mouse I've ever met!" Wendigo screeched, even angrier, having missed the mouse in his attack. He whirled around to face the mouse, still ready for a fight.
He was quite surprised why this mouse hadn't run off yet, and was still trying to talk to him. Couldn't this mouse tell Wendigo was furious at him, and wanted him to leave? He hastily swiped a paw at the mouse's nose in frustration.

Annoying? Well, he has definitely heard that one before. He knew he was a bit much for even some mice, and his sister was quick to shut down his excited rambling. The word alone was not enough to deter him. " Oh! So you've met other mice!" Valerian squeaked, his pitch rising higher as a paw swiped out at him. He ducked back just in time, his nose only grazed by the tips of claws. Scrambling backwards, he tried to keep the distance between them again. " Why are you so mad, sir? I've done nothing but inquired!" His whiskers twitched with a huff. " If it makes you calm down, I'll show you the cute caterpillar I saw earlier!" TAGS: Majority

Wendigo was shocked at this mouse. He'd never seen one quite like it; usually every mouse he's met ran away in fear of him. Never have one of them talked so much or been so unafraid. It seemed to just make Wendigo more furious. "Alright already! What do you want?" Wendigo decided to give the mouse a chance to speak and explain. But it was all Wendigo could do to control himself; he was ready to explode. Not that the mouse had done anything wrong; Wendigo was a mean rat - simple as that.

Dark eyes brightened as the rat relented, finally using his words despite how harsh his tone remained. With a quick shake of his reddish brown fur to eliminate the nerves that certainly would have shown if this had continued, the mouse took a single step forward before pausing. Right, he doesn't like that. Taking a step back, he leaned onto his hind legs so he could motion vaguely with his front paws as he spoke. " I do believe I have already said what I want. Or, rather, what I am curious about." His tail wrapped around him, and he occupied his front paws by clutching at its tip. " Why are you so mad, sir? Is there any way I can help? Ah, aside from leaving, of course. Are you hungry? My father gets irritable when he's hungry." TAGS: Majority

Wendigo narrowed his eyes when the mouse mentioned helping him. Helping Wendigo? No! Wendigo is fine by himself, thank you very much! And even if he did need help, he wouldn't ask it from a little mouse! Wendigo thought this in his little ratty brain, slowly calming down. His fur was still puffed out, but he was no longer poised to strike. "You can help me by leaving the world and never existing again...you mice..." Wendigo muttered, loud enough for the mouse to hear. Then he raised his head slightly in pride and added, "No, I don't need help. Leave now or I will attack again."

This rat was worse than he was at ignoring what was said, though Valerian at least chose to consider the words others. His paws continued rubbing at the tip of his tail as he tilted his head, blinking at the rat. " Leaving solves nothing, sir. It's a temporary solution to a larger problem; some other colony will eventually move in, or the predators will look to the rats in the absence of mice." His parents would be horrified if they heard he had used the food chain for reasoning. His head tilted the other way. " Is attacking all you can do? Why not put your strength and anger into something more constructive?" Valerian paused, reconsidering the rat's threat. Round ears drooped as he visibly deflated and took a small step back. " I know I'm 'annoying', but... I just wanted to be friends." TAGS: Majority

"I can NOT be friends with a mouse!" Wendigo shouted. "And I will not rest until all of you are gone!" Again, he lunged for the mouse, reaching out with his claws to take hold of whatever he could reach. This mouse was really testing his patience, and Wendigo hardly had any.

Once more, his words were ignored, and what the stranger did latch onto only angered him more. Black eyes widened as the rat moved, and the small mouse scrambled backwards and released his tail, already knowing what was about to happen. Letting out a sharp squeak as claws scraped at his pelt, Valerian let instinct take over as he darted to the side to climb up the nearby foliage with ease and speed. " Why!" His composure was beginning to wane as his heart thudded in his ears and his back burned from the graze. " There must be a reason why!" TAGS: Majority

Wendigo followed the mouse intensely, trying to keep up with its quickness and size. Wendigo was a big rat and could not run as fast as a little mouse, which gave him trouble, especially when chasing them, like now. His limp in the back leg hurt when he tried to run, and now it was starting to. Wendigo could not do this much longer, but he wasn't going to show it.
"There does not HAVE to be a reason why, does there?" He asked to no one in particular; mainly himself.

" Oh, but there can't not be!" Climbing farther up a bush, the mouse paused with his paws clinging to the thin stems and his tail wrapping around a group of leaves for support. Black eyes peer down, searching for his aggressor. Very briefly did he forget why he was running as excitement bubbled within. " No action is without reason! No mindset is, either!" With a faint squeak, he remembered what he was supposed to be doing and scrambled up a little higher. " Cause and effect! I ask too many questions- cause! You attacked- effect! But, my annoyance alone--which I'm truly sorry for--does not warrant the hatred of mice as a whole! So, what is your cause, sir?" TAGS: Majority

Wendigo paused and looked up. He could not reach the mouse; every time he tried to climb, the bush's stems swayed dangerously in fear of breaking. Normally, Wendigo would not have cared and been up that tree in an instant. Quite honestly, he was tired, and his leg was throbbing painfully. Wendigo glared at the mouse and said, "Next time, you will regret you ever did this..." He turned and slowly limped away, glimpsing back over his shoulder in case the mouse was following. He turned away and headed back for the rat's rock. But this war was not over yet. Wendigo was only getting started; he had plans.

Beady black eyes stared down at the large rat as the stranger's movements slowed before giving up altogether. Did that mean he was in the clear? He felt hollow, like there was more he could have done to help had the stubborn rat not reacted so violently. Some creatures just don't want to be helped. Valerian let out a sigh before he climbed down from the bush. He sat up on his hind paws once he reached the ground, waiting as he watched the rat limp away. " I never got your name..." His eyes squinted as his back reminded him of the scrape of claws in his fur. That would need to be tended to and- oh! An acorn! As if nothing had happened, despite the rat very much being ingrained in the back of his mind, the small mouse hopped over to a nearby patch of grass in pursuit of acorns. TAGS: Majority

Wendigo slowly walked back to the rat's rock, determination rising in him like a flame. He was determined to get revenge, somehow, even if it meant crossing over to mice's territory. He instantly started developing a plan in his mind, and was eager to get working on it. Pushing past other startled rats, he plopped down in the middle of the living quarters, tired and wanting to rest his aching leg.
